Chris Spatola, Former Duke Coach and ESPN Analyst, Dies at 47

ESPN college basketball analyst Chris Spatola died unexpectedly on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the age of 47. His sister-in-law, Amanda Spatola, shared a heartfelt message from the family following the confirmation of his death by ESPN.

"There are no adequate words to express the sadness our family feels right now," Amanda Spatola wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a photo of herself, her husband J.P. Spatola, Chris, and his wife Jamie. "Chris was so loved, and will be deeply missed. Grateful we got this night together back in June. Love you Chris."

Chris Spatola was the son-in-law of legendary college basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. He was part of the Duke men's basketball staff from 2007 to 2012. The Krzyzewski family issued a statement expressing their profound grief.

"There are no words to adequately express our heartbreak over the loss of our beloved Chris Spatola," the statement read. "Chris served our country, was a devoted husband and father, and was such an important part of our family. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, thoughts, and prayers we have received during this incredibly difficult time. We respectfully ask for privacy as our entire family, particularly Jamie and her three beautiful children [John David, Mackenzie and Madeline] grieve and process this unimaginable loss."

Spatola's career in basketball extended beyond his coaching role at Duke. He also served as a coach for the United States Men’s National Team, which secured gold medals in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2010 World Championships in Istanbul.

His athletic journey began at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, where he was a four-year starter on the basketball team. Following his graduation in 2002, Spatola served as an officer in the United States Army, experiencing combat in Iraq. He also had a stint as a graduate assistant coach for Army during the 2002-03 season.

Chris Spatola joined ESPN as a college basketball analyst in 2015 and also worked as a host for SiriusXM. ESPN released a statement acknowledging his contributions:

"Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster," ESPN said. "He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike.
