Chris Rock Discusses Therapy and Insecurities in New Interview

Chris Rock has been undergoing therapy in recent years to address everyday insecurities that arise, separate from his public status. The 61-year-old comedian revealed in an interview with The New York Times that these feelings of self-consciousness are frequently triggered by interactions with friends who are exceptionally driven and accomplished.

Rock cited Adam Sandler, whose films have achieved significant box office success and who maintains lucrative deals with Netflix, and Rick Rubin, a highly influential music producer known for launching numerous successful careers, as examples of individuals who can make him feel insecure. "Occasionally, I'll meet people that are obviously working harder than me and that'll make me feel insecure - Adam Sandler, Rick Rubin. You’re like, 'How many things are you doing right now?'" Rock explained.

Beyond professional comparisons, Rock also touched on personal aspects, noting that some people are more adept at balancing work and family. "And some people are better with their kids than me," he said, though he added, "I think I’m a good dad." Rock has two daughters, Lola and Zahra, from his marriage to ex-wife Malaak Compton-Rock.

The comedian also discussed the hiatus he took from directing, which lasted 12 years after his 2014 film "Top Five." He attributed the break to a combination of life events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and his divorce, which necessitated a focus on earning income. "Life, COVID, I got divorced, which meant I had to make real money," Rock stated.

His latest directorial project, "Misty Green," written by and starring Rock, explores themes of insecurity. The film centers on a once-famous actress facing eviction and the challenge of starting over. Rock praised lead actress Rosalind Eleazar for her immersive performance.

Regarding the 2022 Oscars incident where he was slapped by Will Smith, Rock reiterated that he has moved past the event. He described it as "not that important" in the grand scheme of global issues, stating, "Me having a bad day is not the biggest — it’s not that important." He reflected philosophically on his own career and financial situation, acknowledging his success while maintaining perspective on wealth in comparison to billionaires.
