Chris Brown Sentenced for London Nightclub Attack

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown has appeared in court to be sentenced for an attack on a music producer at an exclusive London nightclub. Brown, 37, pleaded guilty to affray over the violence that occurred at Tape in Mayfair in the early hours of February 19, 2023.

Prosecutors stated that Brown struck Abraham Diaw twice over the head with a glass bottle and pursued him through the venue. Brown's friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also participated in the assault, punching Mr. Diaw and kicking him while he was on the floor. Mr. Diaw sought medical attention at St. Mary's Hospital for head and knee injuries.

The incident took place more than three years before the sentencing at Southwark Crown Court. Police were alerted to the assault around 3 a.m. CCTV footage reviewed by investigators showed Brown striking the producer's head with a bottle, while Akinlolu punched him in the back of the head. Mr. Diaw was then chased, pushed to the ground, and kicked.

Both Brown and Akinlolu were given opportunities to attend voluntary interviews under caution but did not, leading to them being circulated as wanted. Police arrested Brown on May 15, 2025, at a Manchester hotel shortly after he arrived in the UK for his Breezy Bowl XX tour. Akinlolu was arrested the same morning. Brown was initially denied bail and spent six days in custody before being released from Forest Bank prison upon lodging a £5 million security with the court. This sum served as a guarantee for his return to court, not as a fine.

Bail conditions allowed Brown to continue his international tour, with restrictions on his passport usage. He was required to reside at a specified address, refrain from visiting Tape nightclub, and cease contact with Mr. Diaw. His legal team secured his passport for overseas performances.

Brown had previously denied charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon. However, on July 24 of this year, both he and Akinlolu pleaded guilty to affray after the prosecution agreed not to proceed with the more serious charges. The offense of affray carries a maximum sentence of three years imprisonment.

Claire Campbell, a senior crown prosecutor, described the incident as a "vicious and unprovoked attack," emphasizing that "no one is above the law." Detective Constable Zara Ripamonti called it a "disgraceful, unprovoked assault that put a man in hospital."

Brown, who rose to fame in 2005, has had a notable career in R&B, with hits including "Run It!" and "Loyal." He won his first Grammy in 2012 for best R&B album and received the award again in 2025. His career has also been marked by past legal issues, including a 2009 felony assault conviction for an attack on his then-girlfriend Rihanna.
