Chris Brown Sentenced for London Nightclub Attack

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown has been sentenced in London for his role in a nightclub assault. Brown admitted to affray over a bottle attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at Tape nightclub in Mayfair in the early hours of February 19, 2023.

Prosecutors stated that Brown struck Mr. Diaw twice over the head with a glass bottle and pursued him through the venue. The singer's vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also participated in the assault, punching Mr. Diaw and kicking him as he lay on the floor. Mr. Diaw was treated at St. Mary's Hospital for head and knee injuries.

The sentencing occurs more than three years after the incident at the private members' club. Police were alerted to the assault around 3 a.m. after Mr. Diaw was approached and attacked by individuals known to him. CCTV footage reportedly showed Brown using a bottle as a weapon and Akinlolu punching the producer, who was subsequently chased, pushed, and kicked.

Both Brown and Akinlolu did not attend voluntary interviews under caution and were later circulated as wanted. Police arrested Brown on May 15, 2025, at the Lowry hotel in Manchester, where he had returned for his Breezy Bowl XX tour. Akinlolu was also arrested on the same day. Brown was initially denied bail and spent six days in custody before being released from Forest Bank prison on a £5 million security bond.

This bond served as a financial guarantee for his court appearances, allowing him to continue his international tour under travel restrictions, including passport limitations and requirements to reside at a court-supplied address and avoid contact with Mr. Diaw or the Tape nightclub.

Brown had initially denied charges including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon. However, on July 24 of this year, both he and Akinlolu pleaded guilty to affray after the prosecution agreed not to pursue the more serious charges. The offense of affray carries a maximum sentence of three years' imprisonment.

Claire Campbell, a senior crown prosecutor, described the incident as a "vicious and unprovoked attack," emphasizing that "no one is above the law." Detective Constable Zara Ripamonti of the Metropolitan Police called it a "disgraceful, unprovoked assault that put a man in hospital."

Brown, who rose to fame as a teenager in 2005, has had previous legal entanglements. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to felony assault for an attack on his then-girlfriend Rihanna, receiving probation and community labor, and was ordered to complete a domestic violence counseling program. The 2009 incident involved repeated physical violence that left Rihanna with visible injuries and led to widespread condemnation.
