Chris Brown Avoids Jail Time for London Nightclub Bottle Attack
The R&B singer received a suspended sentence for affray after striking a man with a tequila bottle.
US singer Chris Brown has been given a suspended eight-month prison sentence after a bottle attack at a London nightclub. The R&B star pleaded guilty to affray for striking a man twice in the head with a tequila bottle at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair in the early hours of February 19, 2023.
Brown's vocal coach, rapper Omololu Akinlolu, who joined the attack, received a four-month sentence, also suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.
Judge Tony Baumgartner described Brown's use of the glass bottle as "plainly dangerous" and the violence as "intense." The sentence means Brown will not serve jail time unless he commits another offense within the 12-month suspension period.
The court heard that the attack left music producer Abraham Diaw requiring hospital treatment. CCTV footage showed Brown striking Diaw four times with the bottle, connecting twice with his head and then hitting his shoulder. The prosecutor noted the bottle was a "heavy square-shaped tequila bottle."
During the sentencing, Judge Baumgartner acknowledged Brown's guilty plea, his compliance with bail conditions, and the potential impact a custodial sentence would have on his four children, stating the singer's "risk of further offending is low." The judge also emphasized that Brown's fame does not exempt him from the law, stating, "the law applies equally to everyone."
Brown and Akinlolu had pleaded guilty to affray at Southwark Crown Court in July. More serious charges, including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon, were dropped after their guilty pleas.
The Crown Prosecution Service stated that Brown approached Diaw on the dance floor and struck him twice with a bottle, after which Akinlolu punched Diaw. The assault continued as Diaw attempted to flee, with Diaw being kicked while on the floor.
Brown's defense described the incident as "short and deeply regretted" and noted the absence of serious injuries such as fractures. His lawyer emphasized Brown's role as a "dedicated and a loving father" and stated that he has lived a "good and law-abiding life" since his last conviction in 2013. They also conveyed Brown's profound apology to all present at the club.
Akinlolu's defense stated that he "genuinely believed" Brown was under attack when he intervened, punching Diaw. The defense for Brown described the nightclub as "very small and packed" at the time of the incident, which lasted between 17 and 20 seconds.
Affray is defined under the Public Order Act and involves the use or threat of unlawful violence, causing fear for personal safety.
