Chris Brown Avoids Jail Time for London Club Assault
R&B singer receives suspended sentence for striking producer with tequila bottle.
R&B singer Chris Brown has avoided jail time after pleading guilty to affray charges stemming from a 2023 assault at a London nightclub. Footage released shows Brown repeatedly hitting producer Abe Diaw with a tequila bottle on the dance floor of Tape nightclub in Mayfair.
The incident occurred in February 2023, and the accompanying footage reveals Brown grabbing Diaw's hood and striking him with the bottle. Brown's vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, was also involved in the altercation, attempting to punch Diaw.
The scuffle continued into another room before others intervened to break up the fight. Following the incident, Diaw sought hospital treatment for head and knee injuries. An MRI scan later revealed a significant ligament injury to his left knee.
Appearing at Southwark Crown Court, Brown received an eight-month suspended sentence. His co-defendant, Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray and received a suspended sentence.
During the sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner noted the dangerousness of using a glass bottle as a weapon, stating it carried the risk of more serious injury. The court heard that Brown played a "leading role" in the approximately 20-second attack.
Brown was arrested in March 2025, two years after the incident, having initially denied the assault. He posted a £5 million bail. In October 2023, Diaw filed a lawsuit against Brown, alleging severe and lasting injuries from the attack, including being left unconscious for 30 seconds.
This incident adds to a history of legal troubles for Brown, including a recent court order to pay $13 million after his dog attacked a housekeeper in 2020.
