A suspect in a fatal shooting and kidnapping in Chino Hills, California, was killed by police Wednesday night after a confrontation that followed the assailant cutting power to the victim's residence. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots and screaming.
Surveillance footage shows a silver car entering the victim's driveway around 10:15 p.m. before the suspect cut the home's power, according to a law enforcement source. Officials were seen examining the power box at the residence. The homeowner provided the footage to the police.
When officers arrived, they encountered the suspect's vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect led them on a short pursuit, which concluded near the victim's home. Additional surveillance footage shows the suspect's vehicle stopping, with a passenger exiting and approaching deputies with raised hands. The driver, however, remained in the car, exhibiting unusual behavior before exiting and re-entering the vehicle.
Law enforcement reports indicate the driver then went to the trunk and fatally shot the victim. Officers subsequently opened fire on the driver, killing him. Both the suspect and the victim were pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was unharmed and is in police custody.
The Irvine Police Department stated that the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department executed a search warrant in the area related to the incident. The search warrant was served approximately 31 miles from the crime scene, and it is unclear if it is connected to the suspect involved in the shooting.
Investigators are working to determine the relationship between the victim and the suspects, as well as the motive behind the attack.
