Chinese Nationals Among 23 Intercepted in Rare Maritime Smuggling Attempt Near Florida

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Coast Guard intercepted a smuggling vessel near Florida carrying 23 individuals, including 13 Chinese nationals, in what sources described as a rare and potentially dangerous attempt to enter the United States by sea. The vessel was interdicted Tuesday near Angelfish Creek, Florida, close to Key Largo.

A CBP Air and Marine Operations aircraft initially detected the 27-foot cuddy cabin vessel. The subsequent operation, a joint effort between CBP and the Coast Guard, resulted in the apprehension of all individuals aboard without incident. Among those apprehended were 13 Chinese nationals, eight Ecuadorian nationals, one Dominican national, and one suspected Cuban national identified as the smuggler.

Sources indicated to Fox News that it is highly unusual for Chinese nationals to attempt entry into the U.S. via maritime routes in the Caribbean, which are more commonly used by migrants from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. During the current administration, Chinese nationals have more frequently attempted to enter the U.S. through land border crossings in California and Texas.

Andres Blanco, executive director of Air and Marine Operations Southeast Region, stated that attempts to enter the U.S. illegally by sea are extremely dangerous and will not go undetected. He emphasized that the interdiction demonstrates the effectiveness of maritime partnerships and the commitment to disrupting human smuggling operations before they endanger more lives. Blanco also warned that individuals attempting such voyages face arrest, prosecution, removal, and the risk of losing their lives.

The individuals intercepted were transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Pablo Valent for processing, and the seized vessel was taken into custody. Lt. Corryn Ulrich, commanding officer of the Pablo Valent, commented that the U.S. border remains secure due to capable teams and interagency cooperation, and that they are prepared to save lives and enforce federal law at sea.

The incident occurs as President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet. This meeting follows concerns raised by analysts regarding China's intentions towards the United States, including claims that Xi Jinping is preparing Chinese society and military for potential conflict. These remarks have been amplified by reports of China's alleged support for attacks that resulted in the deaths of U.S. troops in Jordan.

This maritime interdiction also comes amid ongoing discussions about immigration enforcement tactics. A recent incident in Austin, Texas, where a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot an individual accused of illegal entry, has led to protests and calls for investigations. The Department of Homeland Security stated the individual shot had entered the country illegally under the current administration and faced a removal order, though this account has been contested by the individual's lawyer.
