Chinese Fitness Influencer Disqualified from Berlin Marathon for Riding a Bike

Chinese fitness influencer Yuanyuan Sun has been disqualified from the Berlin Marathon after she was photographed riding a bicycle during the race. Sun, who has a significant following on the social media platform RedNote, admitted to her actions, describing them as "truly dishonest behavior."

Sun completed the marathon on September 27 with a time of 4:53:46. However, the Official Marathon Time Integrity Unit noted that her fastest split occurred during the period she was seen on a bike. A fellow marathoner captured the image and submitted it to the integrity unit.

In a statement translated by the CBC, Sun apologized, explaining that she was not feeling well during the race. "My behavior to take a shortcut was disrespectful to the spirit of the marathon," she wrote. "I intentionally concealed this fact during my public sharing after the race. That was a truly dishonest behavior."

The Berlin Marathon organizers have stated that in cases of fraud, they "decide on appropriate measures and, where necessary, impose further sanctions." While a spokesperson declined to comment on Sun's specific case, the event has led to consequences beyond disqualification.

Brooks China, a sportswear brand that sponsored Sun, has terminated its relationship with her. "Upon verifying the facts, Brooks China immediately terminated its relationship with the influencer and publicly reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to integrity, fairness, and the spirit of running," a brand spokesperson told The Athletic.

This incident draws parallels to the case of Rosie Ruiz, who was accused of cheating during the 1979 New York City Marathon and later won the 1980 Boston Marathon amidst similar allegations.
