China Sanctions Officials in Paraguay and Belize Over Taiwan Ties
Beijing targets communications and foreign ministers in response to diplomatic relations with the self-governing island.
China has imposed sanctions on the communications minister of Paraguay and the foreign minister of Belize, citing their countries' ties with Taiwan. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on Monday that the sanctions aim to safeguard China’s national sovereignty and security interests and oppose separatist acts seeking "Taiwan independence."
Paraguay and Belize are among the 12 remaining diplomatic allies of Taiwan, an island democracy that Beijing considers its own territory. In recent years, China has intensified military pressure on Taiwan, conducting near-daily incursions of military aircraft and ships into its vicinity. Concurrently, Beijing has expanded its efforts to persuade Taiwan's diplomatic partners to switch their allegiance. Countries such as Nauru, Honduras, and Nicaragua have shifted their diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to Beijing in recent years.
The diplomatic allies of Taipei that remain are predominantly smaller nations in Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, along with Eswatini in southern Africa and Vatican City.
The sanctions against Gustavo Villate of Paraguay and Francis Fonseca of Belize are largely symbolic. Officials from countries maintaining ties with Taiwan typically do not travel to China. The measures include freezing any assets these officials may hold in China, denying them visas and entry into the country, and prohibiting Chinese individuals and organizations from cooperating with them.
During a speech on Taiwan's National Day on Saturday, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te emphasized the island's commitment to peace while asserting its refusal to relinquish freedom. He stated that Taiwan's increase in defense spending is intended as a deterrent against potential conflict with Beijing, not as a provocation.
China has criticized President Lai's remarks, accusing him of disregarding facts and misleading the public.
