China Launches Anti-Dumping Probe Into EU Chemical Imports Amid Trade Tensions

China has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into imports of p-nitrotoluene, a chemical compound utilized in the production of dyes and pharmaceuticals, originating from the European Union. The announcement from China's Commerce Ministry on Saturday signals a deepening of trade tensions between Beijing and the EU.

The probe was launched in response to a complaint filed by China's domestic chemical industry. Preliminary findings suggest that the prices of p-nitrotoluene imported from the EU experienced a cumulative decrease of nearly 60% between 2022 and 2025, according to the ministry.

This investigation comes amid a period of growing trade friction, with both the EU and China implementing or considering measures to restrict each other's imports. The EU has recently introduced or proposed curbs on products such as electric vehicles and fast fashion from China.

High-level trade discussions between EU officials and their Chinese counterparts are scheduled to take place in Beijing on October 8 and 9. These talks aim to address and mitigate some of the existing trade disputes.
