Children Critically Injured as Hayride Overturns in New York

Multiple children sustained critical injuries after a hayride wagon overturned in Wellsburg, New York, on Sunday. A John Deere tractor pulling the wagon carrying 19 passengers, predominantly children from a German Baptist community, lost control as it approached an intersection.

Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom reported that 14 individuals received treatment at the scene, five were transported to a hospital, and one person required airlift evacuation. Three individuals are currently in critical condition.

According to Sheriff Schrom, a nearby lieutenant witnessed the tractor appearing to speed out of control before reaching the intersection of Berwick Turnpike and Comfort Hill Road. The driver reportedly steered sharply, causing the tractor to roll over and detach from the wagon. Reports indicate the driver was pinned beneath the overturned tractor and dragged before it collided with a tree.

The wagon continued its uncontrolled trajectory across Berwick Turnpike, ultimately crashing and ejecting its passengers. "There was a volunteer fire department nearby, so everyone reacted quickly, but it didn't look good for a few of the people who left here," Schrom stated.

Investigators determined that one of the tractor's brakes was non-functional. "We do know at least one of the brakes on one of the sides of the tractor was significantly burnt up," Schrom said.

Schrom explained that the passengers were members of a German Baptist community, similar to Mennonites or Amish. They were participating in an afternoon youth gathering following church services when the incident occurred as they were descending a hill.

Jeremy Brent, a Wellsburg resident, described the scene to The New York Times, noting the presence of many children and scattered belongings. "I've never seen anything like that in my life," he said.
