Childcare Rapist Extradited Over Hundreds of Abuse Charges

Public images of Ashley Paul Griffith, considered one of Australia's most notorious child sex offenders, have been released for the first time in over four years as he was extradited to New South Wales to face hundreds of additional charges.

Griffith, 48, was transferred across the border on Wednesday morning after being taken from a maximum-security prison in Queensland. Queensland Corrections Minister Laura Gerber confirmed the extradition, stating, "Australia's worst pedophile, Ashley Paul Griffith, was successfully extradited to NSW this morning." She added, "What Griffith did to children was abhorrent. He is a monster."

Griffith was jailed for life in Queensland in November 2024 after pleading guilty to more than 300 child sexual offenses against nearly 70 victims. He had not been seen in public images or footage since his arrest in August 2022.

Footage released by Queensland Corrective Services showed Griffith in a green prison tracksuit being escorted through the maximum-security unit at Wolston Correctional Centre in Wacol, southwest of Brisbane. He was later seen changing into a jeans and military-style jacket he wore when first arrested, before being handcuffed and placed in a secure cage within an unmarked van.

Griffith has been charged in New South Wales with 202 child sexual offenses, allegedly committed against 23 girls as young as ten. These offenses are said to have occurred at a Sydney childcare center between 2014 and 2017.

Authorities at Tweed Heads received Griffith from Queensland authorities at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The decision to transport him by road rather than a private jet was made, according to Ms. Gerber, who commented, "I will say what most Queenslanders are thinking right now: I hope he hit every pothole on the way."

A Brisbane magistrate had approved Griffith's prisoner transfer earlier in the month, during which victims' supporters reportedly shouted insults at him.

The transfer followed a failed attempt in June by Griffith's lawyers to reduce his Queensland sentence. They argued that the 27-year non-parole period for hundreds of offenses against 69 children over nearly two decades was excessive.
