Child's Hidden Letter Discovered 44 Years Later During Home Renovation
A decades-old message, written by a 10-year-old girl and placed in a stairwell cavity, has been reunited with its author.
A hidden letter, penned by a 10-year-old in 1982, has resurfaced 44 years later after being discovered during renovation work in a Hockley, Essex home. The current resident, Michelle Harwood, found the note tucked away in a stairwell cavity and used a local Facebook group to try and locate the original author.
Within an hour, the writer was identified as Rachel Miles, now a 54-year-old teacher living in Milton Keynes. Miles recalled writing the letter as part of a childhood trend inspired by the television program 'Blue Peter,' where creating time capsules was popular. Her father had discovered the stairwell cavity, prompting her to write a message for a future discoverer.
"I just thought it would be quite nice to basically post a letter for the future and I'm obviously quite delighted to see that someone had found it," Miles told the BBC. She expressed pleasure in reliving her childhood memories of the area and reconnecting with past acquaintances.
Miles noted that she had only mentioned her cat, Kizzy, in the letter, describing the animal as a "legend of those parts." Harwood, who was not born when the letter was written, described experiencing "goosebumps" upon reading the message, realizing the note predated her own existence.
The letter, dated August 12, 1982, was written when the house was part of a building site. Harwood, who has lived in the house for 11 years, noted coincidences between her own life and Miles's past, including a shared birthplace region with her husband and both families owning cats at the property. The letter is now displayed on the Harwood family's refrigerator. Miles shared that it was amusing to see how many people remembered her, even after she moved away from Essex. She also commented on the effectiveness of social media in facilitating such discoveries.
