Parents in the United Kingdom are reportedly facing severe financial ruin, loss of homes, and even suicide due to what are described as "fictitious" child maintenance charges and "chaotic dysfunction" within the Child Maintenance Service (CMS), according to a Mail investigation.

The CMS, responsible for enforcing child maintenance payments between parents, has been accused of imposing incorrect and crippling financial burdens. These erroneous charges have allegedly pushed some fathers into "penury" and led to mental breakdowns.

The investigation highlights a systemic issue where parents are allegedly driven to extreme measures, including suicide, due to the stress and financial devastation caused by the service's operations. The findings suggest a significant failure in the system designed to support children by ensuring financial contributions from non-custodial parents.
