Chiefs Stick with Butker as Kicker Amid Tucker Signing Controversy
Special teams coordinator Dave Toub confirms Harrison Butker remains the primary kicker, despite the team's controversial acquisition of Justin Tucker.
Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub has affirmed that Harrison Butker will continue as the team's kicker, despite recent struggles and the controversial signing of Justin Tucker to the practice squad. Toub stated the team's focus is on helping Butker improve.
"We're trying to improve and get Butker right," Toub told reporters, according to ESPN. "That's what this whole thing is about. He's our kicker. He went 10-for-10 yesterday with Tucker standing right there."
Toub acknowledged the challenging conditions during a recent game, noting "28 miles an hour gusts," but emphasized the ongoing commitment to Butker. "We're going to keep working it."
Butker has faced difficulties this season, missing five of his 16 field goal attempts. Two of those misses occurred during the Chiefs' 20-3 loss to the Seahawks. He is expected to play in the upcoming Week 8 matchup against the Broncos, a game that could determine the leader in the AFC West.
Following the Seahawks game, Butker reflected on his performance, attributing his misses to an improper swing. "I’m at my best when I’m smooth and not over swinging," he said. "I don’t think power has been an issue. I think when I miss, it’s because I’m swinging too hard."
The acquisition of Tucker, who was released by the Ravens following allegations of sexual misconduct, has drawn scrutiny. Coach Andy Reid addressed the situation, stating he conducted due diligence before bringing Tucker onto the practice squad. "Listen, I’m not going to get into all that," Reid commented on Tucker's past. "But, to bring him in here, I did some homework. ... He’s here and he’s on the practice squad. So we roll with it."
