The Kansas City Chiefs decisively defeated the Denver Broncos 31-10 in the season's first Monday Night Football matchup at Arrowhead Stadium. The game marked the return of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes nine months after a torn ACL, but it was running back Kenneth Walker who commanded the spotlight.
Walker, a recent offseason acquisition for the Chiefs and the reigning Super Bowl LX MVP, delivered an exceptional performance. He accumulated 191 total yards, including 173 rushing and 18 receiving, and scored two touchdowns. Walker's individual yardage surpassed the entire offensive output of the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos' struggles began early when rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane intercepted a pass from Denver quarterback Bo Nix on the team's opening drive. Mahomes capitalized on the turnover, scoring a 15-yard touchdown on a scramble to give Kansas City an early lead.
Walker Takes Control
In the second half, the Chiefs extended their lead when Walker broke free for a 60-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-1 play. This marked the first time a Chiefs running back had achieved over 140 rushing yards and a touchdown in a single game since Kareem Hunt in 2017.
Denver's offense, under the direction of new offensive coordinator Davis Webb, proved ineffective throughout the game. Quarterback Bo Nix struggled, and the Broncos' unit was unable to match the yardage gained by Walker alone. Broncos head coach Sean Payton appeared visibly frustrated by his team's offensive performance.
Outside of an early touchdown pass from Nix to Evan Engram that briefly tied the game 7-7, Denver's offense stalled, leading to four consecutive punts before halftime. The situation worsened in the third quarter when, trailing 21-7, the Broncos intercepted a pass from Mahomes, giving them possession at the Chiefs' 5-yard line. However, Denver failed to convert, incurring a 10-yard penalty and subsequently fumbling the ball out of bounds near the 16-yard line, resulting in a field goal.
Another fumble by Nix deep in his own territory was recovered by Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones, setting up Walker's second touchdown, a reception from Mahomes, which sealed the victory.
Kelce Reaches Milestone
During the game, veteran tight end Travis Kelce achieved a significant career milestone. An electric 59-yard catch-and-run moved him past Jason Witten (13,046 yards) into second place on the NFL's all-time receiving yards list for tight ends. Kelce now trails only Tony Gonzalez (15,127 yards) for the top spot. Kelce finished the game with 71 receiving yards, leading all Chiefs pass-catchers.
The loss underscores the Broncos' continued challenge in the AFC West, with the Chiefs maintaining their dominance in the division.
