Chichester Named Top Global Travel Destination
Expedia's 'Unpacked’27 Report highlights the West Sussex district's growing appeal for tourists and celebrities alike.
Chichester, a historic district in West Sussex, England, has been recognized as one of the world's top travel destinations, according to Expedia's 'Unpacked’27 Report. Searches for the area have surged by 30% compared to the previous year, placing it among the top ten fastest-growing tourism spots globally, alongside locations in Japan, Mexico, and Italy.
Melanie Fish, a travel expert and spokesperson for Expedia, noted that Chichester's increasing popularity reflects a broader travel trend. "Chichester's rising popularity reflects a wider trend we're seeing among travellers who are looking beyond the UK's best-known cities in favour of destinations that offer character, culture and a slower pace of travel," Fish stated.
The district is also attracting a number of high-profile residents and visitors. Actress Kate Winslet reportedly owns a mansion in West Wittering and is occasionally seen shopping at the local Waitrose. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards also has a property in West Wittering, where he has participated in council meetings to oppose beachfront developments. In 2015, Richards objected to plans for a beachfront cafe and restaurant, arguing it would detract from the area's natural beauty.
Other notable figures associated with the area include actor Nicholas Lyndhurst, known for his roles in "Only Fools and Horses" and "Frasier," and his wife Lucy, who married in Chichester. The area has also become a popular filming location, with actors Steve McFadden and Alan Carr recently seen filming in and around Chichester.
Chichester's appeal is attributed to its blend of historical significance, cultural attractions, and natural landscapes. The city features Roman history, Georgian architecture, and is situated near the South Downs National Park and the coast. Key landmarks include the 16th-century Market Cross, the 950-year-old Chichester Cathedral, and The Novium, a museum built over a Roman bath house. The Pallant House Gallery showcases modern art.
For those interested in equestrian events and motorsports, Goodwood House hosts the annual Festival of Speed and the horse racing festival Glorious Goodwood. The estate also holds the popular event 'Goodwoof,' described as a festival for dogs, which has attracted celebrities such as actor Tom Felton and James Middleton.
The rising popularity of Chichester is also reflected in its property market. As of July 2026, the average house price in the district stands at £432,000, with detached houses averaging £687,000. These figures are significantly higher than the national average house price of £293,000 and the average for South East England at £381,000.
A spokesperson for Zoopla commented on the area's desirability, citing its proximity to the coast, the South Downs National Park, and regular train services to London. Chichester station offers a 90-minute journey to London Victoria, making it an attractive location for those seeking a coastal retreat. However, the area's growing appeal means it may become increasingly busy with tourists.
