Chicago Transit Janitor Fatally Stabbed After Intervening in Altercation
A Chicago Transit Authority janitor was killed Thursday after he stepped in to help a train operator who was being pepper-sprayed by a fare evader.
A Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) janitor, identified as Julian Mobley, 41, died Thursday after being stabbed multiple times in the neck at the Damen Green Line station. Mobley intervened when a fare evader allegedly pepper-sprayed a train operator during an altercation.
According to Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) workers, Mobley attempted to de-escalate the situation after the assailant sprayed the operator with mace. The attacker then produced a knife and stabbed Mobley in the neck, severing a major vein. The suspect fled the scene following the attack.
Mobley was discovered unresponsive in a nearby room and was transported to John H. Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Chicago Police Department is investigating the incident and seeking the perpetrator.
In the wake of the incident, CTA members and union representatives have voiced concerns about safety. Pennie McCoach, President and Business Agent of ATU Local 308, stated, "Another life lost while simply doing their job, another family shattered, and a union that is tired of grieving its own. This is not a tragedy; this is a safety failure." McCoach emphasized that transit workers deserve to return home safely each day and called for "real changes to ensure our members and riders are safe on rail cars, stations and at transit centers."
Audrey Veasley, a coworker of Mobley, described him as "a gentleman, a gentle, kind gentleman." She also highlighted that CTA has "overlooked us and our protection for years," noting that Mobley was not the first janitor to be assaulted. Veasley added, "There's a record of janitors who have been assaulted, blindsided, attacked; even myself, we've been threatened, cursed at, spit at." Both Veasley and McCoach expressed a desire for workers to be able to perform their jobs and return home to their families safely.
Mobley was a father of two and had been married for over 20 years.
