The incident, which occurred on North Clark Street, forced pedestrians to navigate around the clustered machines.
A Sidewalk Bottleneck
The peculiar scene unfolded as runner Becca Ostien encountered the robots, some of which appeared to be trying to maneuver out of the group while others remained stationary. The video depicts the robots with flashing lights, moving among each other with no clear path forward. Social media reactions ranged from amusement to concern, with some commenters highlighting the potential difficulties such a situation could pose for individuals with mobility challenges, including those using wheelchairs or walkers.
Coco Robotics Acknowledges Routing Error
Coco Robotics, the company operating the robots, acknowledged the incident and issued an apology. In a statement, the company attributed the pileup to a "sidewalk deployment error" that caused multiple robots to reroute simultaneously as they departed from their station. Coco stated that this behavior is not how their robots are designed to operate and that the issue caused disruption.
The company reported that its team swiftly identified and rectified the problem, clearing the robots and restoring normal operations within minutes. Coco also stated that it has since resolved the routing issue and implemented additional safeguards to prevent recurrence, emphasizing that such incidents are rare. The company noted that its robots have completed tens of thousands of deliveries in Chicago over the past two years, claiming these deliveries have saved consumers approximately $500,000, created jobs, and reduced vehicle traffic.
Precedent for Robot Disruptions in Chicago
The Chicago sidewalk incident is not the first challenge encountered during the city's delivery robot pilot program. Residents have previously expressed opposition, with petitions calling for a pause in the program. Documented crashes involving delivery robots and bus shelters have also contributed to public frustration.
Accessibility Concerns Magnified

This collaboration allows Coco robots to log sidewalk hazards like fallen e-scooters and broken curb cuts, feeding this data into BlindSquare to provide spoken alerts to users. BlindSquare users can also report cleared obstacles, enabling Coco to update its routing maps in real-time. Coco asserts that robots designed for pedestrian environments have a responsibility to improve it for everyone sharing that space.
However, the Chicago event highlights the critical need for reliability. Autonomous robots must not become obstacles themselves, making the prevention of deployment and routing failures paramount as their fleets expand.
