Cheryl Reflects on 'Naive' Pop Star Past and Embraces New Role on The Voice UK
The Girls Aloud singer shares a humorous reaction to a 23-year-old throwback photo and discusses her return to television.
Cheryl, the 43-year-old singer formerly of the group Girls Aloud, expressed shock and amusement when presented with a 23-year-old throwback photograph from her early pop star days. In a recent interview, she described her younger self as "naive" and wished she could advise her to "enjoy it a bit more."
The photograph, dating back to 2003, shows Cheryl with highlighted red-brunette hair, a red crop top, and a visible lower back tattoo, a stark contrast to her current appearance.
"Oh lord, good sweet baby Jesus have mercy. That doesn't even look like me, does it!" Cheryl exclaimed upon seeing the image. When asked what advice she would give her younger self, she responded, "God love her, she was so naive. I'd just tell her that it's all going to work out, more than you ever could have imagined or dreamed. And to just enjoy it a bit more."
Cheryl rose to fame in 2002 after joining Girls Aloud through the ITV reality competition Popstars: The Rivals. The group achieved significant success before Cheryl embarked on a solo career in 2009, releasing hits such as "Fight For This Love." She also served as a judge on The X Factor for five seasons.
Following the birth of her son Bear in 2017, Cheryl took a hiatus from her music career to focus on motherhood and television work. She returned to the stage in 2024 for a Girls Aloud reunion tour, dedicated to her late bandmate Sarah Harding. She had also stepped away from the public eye after the death of Liam Payne, Bear's father, two years ago.
Recently, Cheryl has re-engaged with the public sphere, partnering with Deliveroo and becoming a brand ambassador for Nivea. Her television comeback is set to continue with a role as a coach on the upcoming series of The Voice UK. She made a surprise appearance during the show's Battle Rounds, assisting her long-time friend Will.i.am.
Viewers reacted positively to Cheryl's return to television. Comments on social media platform X included praise for her appearance and expressions of comfort and joy at seeing her back on screen.
Her upcoming role as a coach on The Voice UK marks a significant return to television after her break. The series has seen recent changes, including the departure of Sir Tom Jones, who stated he was not asked to return due to financial difficulties with insurance. Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon are set to host the new series, replacing Emma Willis, who will present Strictly Come Dancing.
Cheryl expressed empathy for the contestants, stating, "I've stood in the shoes that the contestants are standing in. I know what it feels like to perform in this environment. You've just got to know that you're good or you wouldn't be here."
