Chemical Tank Explosion Forces Evacuations in Toledo, Ohio

A chemical tank exploded in Toledo, Ohio, prompting hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes or shelter in place amid concerns of a toxic release. The mayor warned Wednesday that the tank may still be explosive.

A sheriff's deputy sustained injuries while responding to the explosion, which occurred around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The condition of the deputy was not immediately available.

The tank, owned by MC Tank Transport, contained glycidyl methacrylate, described by the company as an industrial chemical used to enhance plastics, paints, and coatings. The tank has a capacity of 5,500 gallons of the chemical in liquid form. Officials have not determined the cause of the explosion.

According to the Toledo Fire Department, direct contact with glycidyl methacrylate can cause burning sensations in the eyes, nose, mouth, and skin. Symptoms of overexposure include headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting. Karim Baroudi, director of the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, stated that the substance is toxic if touched or ingested and that authorities are working to assess the level of toxicity in the air to provide further guidance.

Residents were advised by Baroudi to close their windows and shower if they experience irritation in their eyes or breathing difficulties. The fire department recommended contacting a medical professional if symptoms arise.

First responders, hazmat, and safety teams have not approached the tank due to the risk of further explosions and are scheduled to reassess the situation later Wednesday.

An evacuation order was issued Tuesday night for residents and businesses within a 1-mile radius of the explosion site. More than 900 people reside in this zone, and all had reportedly left by Wednesday morning. A shelter-in-place order remains in effect for individuals within a 3-mile radius beyond the evacuation zone.

Dense fog in Toledo on Wednesday morning, unrelated to the chemical release, hampered visibility and delayed the use of drones for monitoring the site. The fog was expected to dissipate by mid-morning, according to the National Weather Service.

MC Tank Transport issued a statement confirming their cooperation with emergency authorities. "Our immediate and overriding concern is the safety of area residents, emergency responders and our employees," the company said.
