Chelsy Davy Reflects on Marriage and Motherhood
Prince Harry's former girlfriend Chelsy Davy shares how meeting her husband changed her perspective on settling down.
Chelsy Davy, Prince Harry's former girlfriend, has opened up about her past reluctance towards marriage and motherhood, revealing that meeting her husband, Sam Cutmore-Scott, was the catalyst for her desire to settle down and start a family.
Davy, a jewelry designer, dated the Duke of Sussex on and off for approximately seven years until 2011. In a recent blog post, she admitted that she spent her twenties and early thirties prioritizing enjoyment and adventure over commitment. "Commitment wasn't exactly my strong suit," Davy wrote, detailing a period of her life filled with travel to places like Istanbul, South America, Bali, the Amazon, and Moscow.
She explained that she was "fiercely protective of my freedom" and did not anticipate or desire changing her plans for anyone else. Her outlook began to shift following the COVID-19 pandemic, which temporarily halted her globe-trotting lifestyle, and upon meeting Sam Cutmore-Scott in 2020.
"Marriage and motherhood had never been particularly high on my to-do list," Davy stated. "Both seemed to represent exactly the things I had spent my adult life avoiding: permanence, responsibility, roots and having to take somebody else's plans into account." However, she described her feelings upon meeting Sam as instinctive, realizing for the first time that she wanted a family, specifically with him.
Davy, who was 35 when she met her husband, also acknowledged that timing and possibly biology may have played a role in her change of heart. She and Cutmore-Scott now have three children: Leo, four; Chloe, three; and six-month-old Finn.
Recounting her past relationship with Prince Harry, Davy described the intense media scrutiny as "so full-on: crazy and scary and uncomfortable," stating in 2016 that she found it difficult to cope and felt she was "just trying to be a normal kid and it was horrible."
Despite her previous avoidance of domesticity, Davy now finds immense fulfillment in motherhood. She remarked, "I sometimes say my children saved me from myself." While she does not regret her earlier years, she recognizes that her children have significantly altered her life, restricting her freedom and making spontaneity difficult, while also being a "financial drain." Nevertheless, she added, "I am completely and utterly obsessed with them."
She also shared the unexpected anxiety that motherhood brought, including a "constant worry" for her children's well-being and a "low-level anxiety that something might happen to them." A particularly frightening incident occurred when her youngest son, Finn, contracted meningitis at just two weeks old.
Davy and Cutmore-Scott married in a private ceremony in Mauritius in 2022 and currently reside there with their children. She continues to run her jewelry brand, Aya, from her home, balancing her professional life with raising her family. Reflecting on her current life, she concluded, "I loved that life, and I'm very glad I had it. I just wouldn't swap this one for it."
