Chelsea has completed the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta for a reported fee of £47 million. The 21-year-old's transfer represents the first major acquisition since Xabi Alonso took the helm as Chelsea manager.
Palestra's move to Stamford Bridge follows a rapid ascent in his career. He progressed from Italy's third tier with Atalanta's under-23 side to Chelsea in just three years. Palestra made his senior debut for Atalanta in the Europa League in December 2023. His development accelerated during a loan spell at Cagliari last season, which led to his senior debut for Italy during the World Cup play-offs.
During his loan at Cagliari, Palestra demonstrated significant attacking prowess for a defender. He attempted 73 dribbles exceeding 5 meters, the most by any defender in Serie A last season. His 70 successful dribbles ranked highest among defenders in Europe's top 10 leagues. He also won 15 fouls in the final third, tied for the most by a defender in Europe's top five leagues. Furthermore, Palestra covered the most distance at sprinting speed of any player during his loan spell at Cagliari.
Guido Angelozzi, former sporting director at Cagliari, noted that the club faced substantial competition from Italian and European clubs to secure Palestra's services. Angelozzi stated that Cagliari provided a supportive environment for Palestra to compete under pressure, allowing him room for error. He also mentioned that Chelsea and other prominent European clubs inquired about Palestra's character.
Angelozzi described Palestra as a mature and curious young man with a strong personality, consistently seeking improvement. He added that Palestra is polite, level-headed, and dedicated to his daily work, traits that translate to his performance on the field. Chelsea reportedly monitored Palestra for over a year and will be aware of his attacking capabilities and versatility, as he can play at full-back or wing-back and began his career in central midfield.
Palestra's arrival could signal a tactical shift under Alonso, potentially indicating a move towards a back-three system, which he employed successfully at Bayer Leverkusen. Angelozzi highlighted Palestra's combination of technical skill and football intelligence, noting his excellent timing, situational awareness, and decision-making under pressure. He also emphasized Palestra's willingness to make sacrifices for the team, accept tactical instructions, and his continuous drive to improve.
Despite interest from clubs including Inter Milan, Juventus, Napoli, and Roma, Chelsea ultimately secured Palestra. Atalanta had also expressed a desire to retain the defender. Angelozzi believes that if Palestra maintains his mindset, he possesses the qualities for a top-level career, describing him as a more complete, mature, and mentally ready player for the higher level.
