Chelsea secured a narrow 3-2 victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage, with Cole Palmer once again proving instrumental for the Blues. The win, however, was tempered by persistent defensive concerns, particularly in the goalkeeping position.
Joao Pedro opened the scoring for Chelsea within the first minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. The early lead was short-lived as Fulham's Josh King leveled the score midway through the first half, capitalizing on space afforded to him by the Chelsea defense and beating goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with a shot to the near post. The notes from the match highlight that after all the signings Chelsea has made, the team has "forgotten to sign a new goalkeeper" and that it was the position they "needed to strengthen most."
Chelsea reasserted their superiority before halftime. Cole Palmer provided the assist for Maxence Lacroix, who crossed to Morgan Rogers for his competitive debut goal, putting Chelsea back in front. Rogers, a new £117 million signing, finished from a tight angle after a well-worked attacking move.
Palmer continued his influential performance in the second half, scoring Chelsea's third goal by threading the ball through the goalkeeper's legs. Fulham, however, responded again. A defensive error allowed Gonzalo Garcia to score, heading the ball in off the underside of the crossbar, bringing the score to 3-2.
Enzo Fernandez was introduced midway through the second half to a chorus of boos from the home crowd. Towards the end of the match, Antonee Robinson of Fulham had an opportunity to equalize, lobbing the ball over Sanchez but directing it wide of the post.
Chelsea managed to hold on for the win, but Palmer briefly caused concern when he pulled up with what appeared to be cramp. The performance has led to commentary that while Chelsea's defense needs improvement, "anything is possible if Palmer can stay fit and play like this," with some even tipping Chelsea for the Premier League title.
