Chelsea Football Club has finalized the acquisition of Sporting winger Geovany Quenda for a reported fee of £40 million. The 19-year-old Portuguese international has signed an eight-year contract with the London-based club.
Quenda's transfer was initially agreed upon in March 2025 during Enzo Maresca's tenure as manager, and he is expected to integrate into the first-team squad. He possesses versatility, capable of playing as a winger, attacking midfielder, and wing-back. Quenda has already begun training with the team at Chelsea's Cobham base.
"It feels great to be here," Quenda stated in the club's announcement. "Chelsea is a great team and I am excited to play here at Stamford Bridge. The club has shown faith in players like me and I am proud to be here, proud to be part of this club."
He added, "I am excited to work with my team-mates and the manager, Xabi Alonso. I'm a very hard-working young person and I like to help my team. I want to be someone known for having the right mentality to help my team-mates and who does their best for the club to win trophies."
This move marks Quenda's departure from Portugal, where he made 86 appearances for Sporting, including 16 in the Champions League. He broke into the first team under former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.
Quenda is the second signing announced under new manager Xabi Alonso, following the £42 million acquisition of Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra. Chelsea has also reportedly held discussions regarding a move for Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria and explored the possibility of signing Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. The club's attempts to sign midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland were unsuccessful.
Further strengthening options, sources in France and Argentina suggest Valentin Barco, who has announced his departure from sister club Strasbourg, is also set to join Chelsea.
On the player movement front, Chelsea has seen several departures. Marc Cucurella has joined Real Madrid, Tyrique George has moved to Everton, and Andrey Santos is expected to join Manchester United after a £50 million deal was agreed upon.
