A historic Italian restaurant in Chelsea, La Famiglia, is facing a potential closure after a licensing review was triggered by a neighbor's complaints about noise. The venue, a favorite for over 50 years among figures like Princess Diana and Kate Moss, has seen its operations significantly impacted by the dispute.
The controversy centers on the restaurant's garden room, which was extended in the early 1980s and backs onto residential properties. According to reports, a new resident in an adjoining flat, who began renting in early 2024, lodged complaints with the local council by January of the same year.
In an effort to appease the neighbor, La Famiglia voluntarily reduced its garden service hours from midnight to 11 p.m. and implemented a 'noise marshal' to monitor and manage customer volume. These measures have reportedly affected profits.
Despite these concessions, the complaints continued, escalating to include issues such as the singing of "Happy Birthday" disturbing a young child. This led the restaurant to ban singing in the garden room last October. The neighbor is now reportedly demanding that food service in the garden cease by 9 p.m., a change that could render the restaurant unviable by eliminating the possibility of a second seating.
Supporters of La Famiglia argue that the restaurant has operated for decades without prior neighborly complaints and that the current situation has become unreasonable. The licensing sub-committee meeting is set to address allegations of 'public nuisance and protection of children from harm.'
In response to the potential threat to the restaurant, a number of celebrities and local patrons have reportedly written letters to the council in support of La Famiglia ahead of the licensing review.
