Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso expressed his delight at the prospect of working with Mykhailo Mudryk, whose four-year doping ban was recently overturned. The 25-year-old Ukrainian winger has been sidelined since November 2024 and will now join his teammates on their pre-season tour in Hong Kong.
Alonso, speaking after a pre-season friendly loss, stated that the news of the ban reduction was unexpected but welcomed. "We feel that he will be working with us," Alonso said, anticipating Mudryk's reintegration into the squad. He recalled Mudryk's impactful performances for Shakhtar Donetsk, noting his speed, one-on-one ability, and capacity to create scoring opportunities, describing him as a "special player."
Mudryk's career was interrupted when he was charged with a doping violation. While the exact source of the exposure remains unidentified, it is believed to have occurred during international duty with Ukraine in September 2024. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) had previously updated its scientific guidance, increasing reporting thresholds to enhance confidence that positive samples exceed minimum levels.
The Chelsea manager acknowledged that Mudryk will require time to regain full match fitness and integrate with the team, having trained alone for an extended period. "He trained on his own every day, and it had to be really, really hard, because he wanted to play football, he wanted to be part of a team, and he was not allowed to do that for such a long time," Alonso commented. He emphasized the need for support from the club, teammates, and staff as Mudryk readapts.
Mudryk joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 on an eight-and-a-half-year contract. Alonso indicated that decisions regarding Mudryk's immediate future, including whether he will remain with Chelsea or be loaned to sister club Strasbourg, are premature and will depend on his fitness and performance upon his return to competitive play. "We need to see. It’s too early to tell," Alonso stated. The club is focused on supporting Mudryk through this significant transition.
