Chelsea has expressed interest in acquiring England defender John Stones, who recently became a free agent following his departure from Manchester City. The west London club is now competing with Inter Milan for the 32-year-old's signature.

Stones' contract with Manchester City expired at the end of June, making him available for a free transfer. This development occurs as Chelsea also negotiates to sign Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix and evaluates other defensive options, including Como's Jacobo Ramon.

Chelsea's potential pursuit of Stones is occurring within a period of squad reshaping. The club is reportedly looking to sell current central defenders to create space for new arrivals. Negotiations are underway for Trevoh Chalobah to join Como, and Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile are also considered available for transfer.

Stones spent eight seasons at Manchester City after joining from Everton for £47.5 million in 2016. During his tenure, he contributed to the club's success, including six Premier League titles, a Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. The former Barnsley defender has earned 93 international caps for England and was part of the squad that achieved third place at the World Cup.

In other club transfer news, Chelsea recently announced the signing of midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million. The club is also reportedly in discussions with Aston Villa regarding a potential loan move for Argentinian winger Alejandro Garnacho to the Midlands club.
