Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery, the club confirmed Friday. The injury sustained in training ruled the 26-year-old midfielder out of Chelsea's recent 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth.

James did not travel with the squad for the Bournemouth match, a departure from his usual practice when injured, which had raised concerns about the severity of his latest setback. Following medical assessments, surgery was determined to be the necessary course of action.

Chelsea stated that James has begun his recovery process and will be supported by the club's medical department at their Cobham training base. "Everyone at Chelsea wishes Reece a speedy recovery and will support him on his road to return," the club said in a statement.

Levi Colwill captained Chelsea in James' absence against Bournemouth. Manager Xabi Alonso is expected to provide further details on James' recovery timeline at a press conference Friday.

This latest injury adds to James' history of fitness issues, particularly hamstring problems. Alonso had been deploying James in a midfield role rather than his traditional right-back position, but this new issue leaves the team with fewer midfield options.

While Moises Caicedo has returned from a previous layoff, bolstering the midfield until at least January, Chelsea is reportedly looking to acquire at least one new player in that area during the winter transfer window.
