Chelsea Boosted by Return of Key Players Ahead of Bournemouth Clash
Manager Xabi Alonso confirms Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Reece James, and others are fit and ready to play.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has announced a significant boost for the team ahead of their upcoming match against Bournemouth, with several key players declared fit and available for selection after injury layoffs. Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Reece James, and Marco Palestra are all "ready to go," according to Alonso.
The team returns to Premier League action after a three-week international break, during which they have been focusing on recovery and training. Chelsea currently sits 10th in the league table, having suffered a 3-0 defeat against Brentford prior to the break, a match that was impacted by the absence of several of these now-returning stars.
Alonso expressed optimism regarding Caicedo's return, stating, "He's ready to go. Finally, you have been asking this question and we have used the time with Moises to get him back fit. He's been training good and he's OK to go." Caicedo had previously been sidelined with a calf issue, and his availability is expected to bolster Chelsea's midfield.
Regarding Palmer, Joao Pedro, and James, Alonso confirmed, "They have been able to train. Some of them earlier than others, Marco Palestra as well. So we have used the time and that was the plan." He specifically addressed Palmer's situation, noting, "Cole has trained the last week. He has felt better. We didn't want to rush because we had enough time. The most important thing for Cole is to be fully fit, that he enjoys his game, that he is feeling OK."
While Caicedo participated in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Portsmouth during the break, it is understood that Palmer, Joao Pedro, and James did not feature in that fixture. However, their return to full training signals their readiness to contribute.
Alonso also commented on Palmer's withdrawal from international duty, which drew criticism from England manager Thomas Tuchel. Alonso stated, "He's committed but he needs to be fully fit to play and when he's fully fit, he will enjoy his minutes. We need him in that moment, the club and the national team."
Caicedo's prior injury history included missing the start of the season and a brief, ill-fated return against Brighton where he had to be substituted shortly after coming on. Alonso acknowledged the team's struggles without him, saying, "Any team will miss a player of his quality, his importance, his dynamic. We have missed him, for sure, and we are happy to have him back. He feels better. We did not want to take risks for Brentford, for example, because we did against Brighton, I took risks myself and I said, 'Xabi you did it wrong', but now he feels much better."
Despite finding the international break "too long," Alonso indicated it has served as a beneficial period for his squad, allowing crucial recovery time for the injured players. The match against Bournemouth will see Chelsea face a side managed by Marco Rose, who previously led RB Leipzig when they ended Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen's 35-match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga.
