A 28-year-old chef has sought euthanasia in Spain, stating that she is unable to endure the chronic pain and life-altering injuries she sustained two years ago after an alleged attempted murder by her ex-boyfriend. Ainhoa Caballero Medina claims the attack left her with brain damage, facial paralysis, and the loss of her sense of smell and taste.

Medina's ordeal began on June 24, 2024, when her former partner, identified as Antonio David SM, allegedly attacked her outside her apartment. She recounted that he grabbed her by the neck, punched her, and threw her to the ground, repeatedly slamming her head against a curb. The assault left her unconscious and with severe injuries, including intracranial hemorrhages and a fractured petrous bone. Her recovery process lasted 301 days, during which she underwent multiple surgeries.

Despite the severity of her injuries, Medina alleges that local authorities failed to provide adequate support. She claims her local council refused to recognize her as a victim of domestic abuse, and the National Social Security Institute (INSS) deemed her fit to return to work, a prospect she deems impossible due to her physical condition and the pain medication she requires.

"I have to spend every day pretending that nothing is wrong, when in reality, even my soul hurts. When you live with constant pain, you live in anger. That's not life," Medina stated. She also expressed fear due to ongoing threats from her ex-partner, who is currently under provisional detention and subject to a restraining order, but allegedly continues to contact her from prison.

Medina's decision to pursue euthanasia stems from her physical suffering and a perceived indifference from the authorities handling her case. "If a dog has the right to a dignified death to end its suffering, I believe a person should have that same right," she said. Doctors have reportedly approved her euthanasia request, pending court formalities.

Before her death, Medina expressed a desire to see her ex-partner convicted and imprisoned for life. She also offered a message to other women experiencing abuse, urging them to report any incidents immediately. She also criticized the social worker who she claims mistreated her, stating that such individuals should fulfill their duty to support victims.

"I survived, but I lost my life. I wish I died that day," Medina said, reflecting on the lasting impact of the attack and her subsequent experiences. She is currently awaiting the completion of legal proceedings before the euthanasia procedure can proceed.
