Cheez-It Rolls Out New High-Protein Cracker Amidst Popularity of Protein-Focused Diets
The familiar snack now offers seven grams of protein per serving, aiming to capture a growing market interested in protein enhancement.
Cheez-It is launching a new protein-enhanced version of its classic cracker, Cheez-It Protein Original, available in October. This new iteration boasts seven grams of protein per serving, significantly more than the original Cheez-It's three grams.
The move aligns with a broader trend of increased interest in protein consumption, sometimes referred to as "protein maxxing," which has gained traction among individuals focused on preserving muscle mass during weight loss, particularly those using GLP-1 medications.
Each serving of Cheez-It Protein Original contains 140 calories, five grams of fat, 260 milligrams of sodium, and one gram of fiber. In comparison, original Cheez-Its have 150 calories, eight grams of fat, 230 milligrams of sodium, and one gram of fiber per 30-gram serving.
Early reviews suggest the taste and texture are remarkably similar to the original. Sean Abrams of Delish noted that the protein version was "a touch less aggressively cheesy," a difference he found to be a positive. He described the crunch and saltiness as remaining consistent with the familiar Cheez-It experience.
Registered dietitian Sonya Angelone commented to Food & Wine that while the added protein is a modest increase, the new cracker could serve as a convenient option for those who already consume Cheez-Its and are looking for a slight protein boost in a shelf-stable snack. However, she emphasized that whole, nutrient-rich foods should remain the primary source of protein for meeting daily needs. Angelone suggested viewing the protein Cheez-It as a "snack-sized contribution" towards protein goals rather than a replacement for primary protein sources.
The Cheez-It Protein Original crackers will retail for $4.49 per box upon their release in October.
