Cheerios Introduces Resealable Packaging to Address Consumer Complaints

Cheerios is launching a new packaging design that features a resealable Ziploc PantrySeal bag inside the traditional cereal box. This initiative comes in response to years of consumer feedback requesting a more convenient way to close and preserve the freshness of cereal.

The new packaging is designed with a partially opening top that creates a pour spout. This spout can then be resealed, aiming to prevent cereal from going stale. General Mills, the parent company of Cheerios, stated that both brands receive a significant number of annual comments and reactions concerning cereal packaging.

A survey conducted in December 2025 indicated that 90% of cereal consumers take additional measures to maintain cereal freshness after opening a box. These measures include using clips, clothespins, and dedicated cereal containers.

"Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they've been asking for," Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills, said in a statement. Consumers have frequently voiced their desire for resealable packaging on social media platforms and forums.

The Ziploc PantrySeal differs from a standard resealable bag in that its zipper closure extends only partway across the top, facilitating easier pouring and potentially reducing spills. Initially, this packaging will be available for original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. It is expected to be rolled out to other retailers nationwide in the coming months after its exclusive debut at Walmart on October 27.
