Checkerboard Patterns Make a Comeback in Home Decor This Autumn
A softer, more tonal approach to the classic checkerboard design is emerging in homeware, offering a versatile update for the fall season.
Checkerboard patterns are re-emerging as a key trend in home decor for the autumn season, moving beyond stark black-and-white to incorporate warmer, more subtle color palettes.
While traditional monochrome checkerboard designs remain available, interior experts are observing a rise in softer, tonal variations. These include combinations like cream and taupe, terracotta and blush pink, or natural stone shades. This evolution allows the graphic pattern to add character to a space without overwhelming it, making it more adaptable for everyday living.
Richard Skeoch, director of Hyperion Tiles, noted a growing interest in these warmer combinations. "We are seeing much more interest in warmer combinations such as cream, taupe, terracotta, pink and natural stone tones," Skeoch said. "This makes the pattern feel softer and easier to live with, while still giving a room plenty of character."
Retailers are reflecting this trend in their autumn collections. Habitat's new designs include a green resin trinket tray, while Marks & Spencer offers jacquard bedding and Made presents a rust-toned cushion, all featuring check patterns in softer hues.
For those who prefer neutral tones, the checkerboard trend offers options that add visual interest without being overpowering. Argos offers a sculpted checkerboard throw, H&M Home features a wool-blend rug with a textured treatment, and John Lewis presents a sideboard with a dark brown checkerboard design paired with a marble top.
Incorporating the trend doesn't require a complete home overhaul. Smaller accessories like checked cushions or throws can provide an autumnal update. Daisy London's Shrimps jewelry box and Perch & Parrow's pouffe are examples of how the pattern can be introduced through smaller decorative items or accent furniture.
Budget-friendly options are also available, with Primark offering a three-pack of checkerboard picture frames for £6, providing an accessible way to refresh a room's aesthetic for the season.
