A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run death of a 6-year-old girl in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with the hit-and-run death of 6-year-old Mariana Espinoza. The incident occurred on October 23 near the Oak Forest neighborhood, approximately eight miles east of Uptown Charlotte.
Espinoza was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Barrington Drive and Lanecrest Drive and later died in the hospital on October 24. Police identified the vehicle involved as a grey 2012-2015 Mercedes Benz C250 with a sunroof. At the time of the incident, the car was described as having heavy damage to its front grille, black rims, and a black/matte gas cap cover door. A temporary license plate was on the vehicle.
The suspect, identified as Lachevis Finnie, was arrested on October 26. Court documents indicate that Finnie was not in possession of a valid driver's license and fled the scene without contacting law enforcement. Finnie is scheduled to appear in court on October 27.
Mariana Espinoza was a student at Devonshire Elementary School. A spokesperson for the school district stated that the loss would be deeply felt within the school community and that support would be provided to students, families, and staff. The investigation into the incident is ongoing and has been taken over by CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit.
The family of Mariana Espinoza has started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses. "Rest in peace, little Mariana. Your six years of life will live forever in the hearts of those who love you," the family wrote on the fundraising page.
