Robert and Kathryn Kirk, the parents of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, made their first court appearance Monday to confront the man accused of their son's murder. They attended pre-trial hearings in Provo, Utah, alongside Kirk's widow, Erika, to witness prosecutors present evidence against Tyler Robinson, 23, who faces aggravated murder charges.
The parents of the Turning Point USA leader, who was shot and killed at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025, have largely remained out of the public eye since his death. Robert Kirk, a prominent architect involved in the construction of Trump Tower, and his wife Kathryn, a former mental health counselor, walked arm-in-arm into the courthouse. Robert Kirk was seen smiling at supporters, while Kathryn Kirk wore sunglasses.
During the hearing, prosecutors presented footage of the moments leading up to the shooting. The judge barred the rest of the courtroom from viewing the video, citing a need to show respect and dignity to Kirk's loved ones. Kirk's parents and widow left the courtroom before the footage was shown.
This marks the first time Robert and Kathryn Kirk have seen Robinson in person, and they stated their intention to attend all future court appearances. Despite their son's prominent role in conservative politics, the Kirks maintained a low profile during his rise.
Robert Kirk's career as an architect included work on Trump Tower in Manhattan between 1979 and 1983. A 2018 Chicago Tribune profile quoted Charlie Kirk describing his parents as Republicans, though "not particularly ardent ones." Kirk also had a younger sister, Mary, an art curator, whom he posted about in 2014, but her attendance at the hearings is unclear.
Robinson, 23, faces a potential death penalty if convicted of murdering Kirk. He has not yet entered a plea, and his defense attorneys have not commented on the case. Prosecutors have stated their intent to seek capital punishment.
Erika Kirk, who has taken over leadership of Turning Point USA, wore all black to the hearing. The couple's two young children were not present. Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Anderson Trump, also made a surprise appearance at the courthouse.
The Kirk family released a statement thanking supporters for their prayers and kindness during the difficult process. "Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children," the statement read.
