Charlie Kirk's Family to Sue Utah College, Police Over MAGA Star's Assassination
A notice of claim alleges a 'series of stunning failures and reckless decisions' led to the death of the Turning Point USA founder.
Charlie Kirk's family has announced their intention to sue multiple authorities in the aftermath of the conservative media figure's assassination on the Utah Valley University campus on September 10, 2025. A newly filed notice of claim asserts that a "series of stunning failures and reckless decisions" by university parties created a foreseeable danger that ultimately led to Kirk's death.
The family's claim, which comes shortly after the one-year anniversary of Kirk's death, states that Utah Valley University failed to conduct a "meaningful risk assessment" prior to the event and did not allocate sufficient security resources. University police reported that six campus officers were assigned to the event.
The notice read: "Through a series of stunning failures and reckless decisions, the UVU Parties created a foreseeable danger to Charlie. Those decisions ultimately rendered Mr. Kirk helpless to the rooftop shooter in an assassination that could have been avoided had the UVU Parties only taken reasonable steps to plan and oversee a safe event, steps outlined below that have been standard practice for other universities hosting controversial speakers."
The family also pointed to the authorities in Orem, Utah, for inadequate planning, particularly in light of the assassination attempt on then-President Trump months earlier by a rooftop shooter. "The risk of a rooftop shooter should have been especially top-of-mind given the attempted assassination of President Trump, Charlie Kirk's close friend and political ally, by a rooftop shooter the previous year," the notice stated.
Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was 31 years old at the time of his death. He was killed during an outdoor event at the university as part of his organization's American Comeback Tour, while engaging with an audience of approximately 3,000 people. His alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, is currently awaiting trial for murder and faces the possibility of the death penalty.
