Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of the conservative group Turning Point USA, was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon in front of a large crowd at Utah Valley University while speaking as part of his "The American Comeback Tour." Kirk collapsed after being struck in the neck by a single bullet and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition; he was declared dead about two-and-a-half hours later.

Witnesses said Kirk had been answering a question about mass shootings seconds before he was hit. The shooting occurred on a campus stage before thousands of attendees, and initial accounts indicate the shot came from a distance of roughly 200 yards.

A video clip that has circulated widely since the shooting shows Kirk in a previous campus exchange welcoming a young gay man, identified in the clip as Chris, into the conservative movement. In that earlier discussion the man introduced himself as gay and asked what message Kirk had for LGBTQ+ people who might feel excluded from conservatism. Kirk responded that a person’s sexual attraction should not be the primary way they introduce themselves and that people are "complete human beings" who may share political priorities such as stronger borders and national security. He also said that, from his perspective as a Christian, he did not agree with the man’s lifestyle but that politics is about addition and multiplication, and he welcomed him to the movement.

Chris reshared the clip on the social platform X following Kirk’s death, writing that the exchange changed his view of Kirk. The clip has been discussed widely in news accounts and on social media amid an outpouring of tributes.

Kirk rose to prominence as a conservative organizer and commentator, building a following among young conservatives with campus events and media appearances. He founded Turning Point USA and was a frequent and combative presence at college debates on cultural and political issues, including education, religion and LGBTQ+ rights. Supporters credit him with energizing parts of the conservative youth movement and helping to mobilize voters in recent presidential elections; critics frequently challenged his positions and tactics.

Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika Frantzve, and their two young children, a daughter aged three and a son about 16 months, the couple celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary in May. President Donald Trump led public tributes, posting on Truth Social that "The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead," and offering condolences to Kirk’s wife and family. The White House said the president ordered American flags lowered to half-staff until Sunday evening at 6 p.m. Eastern Time in Kirk’s honor.

Details about the shooting, including a possible suspect or motive, have not been released. Authorities and campus officials have said investigations are underway. News organizations and law enforcement continue to seek confirmation of the circumstances surrounding the attack and will report further information as it becomes available.
