Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot Wednesday while speaking at a campus event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, according to officials and statements from prominent conservatives. Kirk, 31, was wounded in the neck by an unknown gunman during a question-and-answer session at the event and later died, prompting tributes from national political figures.
Kirk built his public profile by staging debates and campus events through Turning Point USA, the group he launched with mentor Bill Montgomery. Montgomery, who died in July 2020 at age 80 from complications of COVID-19, met Kirk when Kirk was a teenager and provided early funding and guidance that supporters say helped turn the organization into one of the most influential conservative youth movements in the country.
Montgomery first met Kirk after hearing the then-18-year-old speak at a college event, according to accounts of the relationship. He advised the young activist to forgo college and helped provide seed money for Turning Point USA after Kirk began his political efforts in 2012 with a small group called SOS Liberty and early online videos promoting conservative views.
Kirk’s family has generally kept a low public profile. His father, Robert Kirk, worked in the construction industry and ran an architecture firm, with reported credits on high-profile projects that include Trump Tower in Manhattan and the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. It is not publicly known whether Robert Kirk ever met Donald Trump during the developer’s real estate career decades before Charlie Kirk became a prominent ally of the former president. Kirk’s mother, Kimberly Ann, has been described in reports as a mental health counselor.
Public records show Kirk and his wife, Erika, lived in Arizona with their two children. Media reports cite a residence valued at roughly $5.2 million. Kirk shared publicly some family photographs over the years, including images of a grandmother attending Chicago Cubs games and a sister, Mary, who later became an art curator in Illinois.
Kirk frequently recounted that his political awakening began not at home but in high school, where he said he clashed with a teacher over issues including former President George W. Bush. In a 2018 profile, he described his parents as Republicans “but not particularly ardent ones.” He rose from campus debater to a leading voice in conservative youth politics, often appearing at colleges to challenge progressive students on issues such as abortion and gun control.
Word of Kirk’s death drew immediate responses from political figures. Former President Donald Trump posted that Kirk was dead and called him “legendary,” saying he understood “the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America.” Trump earlier urged the nation to pray when initial reports of the shooting emerged and later directed that flags at the White House be lowered to half-staff.
Investigators have not publicly identified a suspect or released details of a motive. Local law enforcement and university officials have said they are coordinating their response and that more information will be provided as the investigation continues. Turning Point USA did not immediately release a full statement beyond initial confirmations that the event was the site of a shooting and that Kirk had been struck.
Kirk’s death marks a sudden and violent end to a high-profile career that influenced conservative organizing on college campuses nationwide. Bill Montgomery’s role as a mentor and financier is frequently cited by allies as critical to Turning Point USA’s early growth; Montgomery and Kirk launched the organization in 2012 and the group expanded in subsequent years into a major presence at political events and campus debates.
Authorities continue to investigate the shooting. University officials have said counseling and support services are being made available to students and staff affected by the incident, and that the campus community has been cooperating with law enforcement as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
