Charles Spencer Suggests Prince Harry is Developing Princess Diana Documentary
Princess Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, has hinted at Prince Harry's involvement in a documentary about their mother in his new memoir.
Charles Spencer has fueled speculation that his nephew, Prince Harry, is working on a documentary about Princess Diana, the late mother of both princes. Spencer makes the suggestion in his new memoir, titled “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.” He states that he chose to write his own account of Diana’s life and their shared history due to the 30th anniversary of her death and a desire to avoid participating in other productions.
Spencer writes in his memoir that he has been declining “endless” requests to appear in documentaries about Diana from various individuals, including “a nephew.” While he does not explicitly name this nephew, the context strongly implies it is Prince Harry. Spencer expressed a preference for documenting his own memories rather than contributing to productions he felt might have an agenda.
Reports have previously emerged suggesting that Prince Harry is in discussions to create a documentary about his mother. While these have not been officially confirmed, the Daily Mail reported earlier this month that one of the reasons for Harry’s return to the United Kingdom was to pursue this project. The publication also stated that Harry has been contacting friends and acquaintances of Diana to contribute to the alleged film.
The potential documentary has reportedly caused friction between Prince Harry and his brother, Prince William. According to royal expert Richard Kay, William is experiencing “intense frustration” over the project, feeling that Harry is attempting to monopolize their mother’s legacy. Kay suggested that Harry’s use of the “Spencer brand” and name might be part of an effort to distance himself from the Royal Family.
Princess Diana died in August 1997 at the age of 36 from injuries sustained in a car crash. Spencer’s memoir also includes other notable claims, such as his assertion that their father, King Charles III, reacted to Diana’s death with language that sounded like he had won the lottery, and that he vowed she would be forgotten.
A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace responded to Spencer’s memoir, stating that “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize.” The statement suggested that the loss of Diana may have influenced Spencer’s recollections.
