Charles Barkley Criticizes LeBron James Over National Anthem Conduct
NBA legend Barkley agrees with Donald Trump's assessment of James's actions during the national anthem.
NBA legend Charles Barkley has voiced criticism of LeBron James's actions during the national anthem, finding himself in agreement with former President Donald Trump on the matter. James faced backlash last week after video showed him practicing a golf swing while the Star-Spangled Banner played before the Philadelphia 76ers' season opener against the New York Knicks.
Barkley, speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio, stated that while he doesn't pay attention to Trump's opinions, he found James's behavior "very disrespectful." Barkley emphasized the importance of standing for the anthem, noting, "We live in the greatest country ever where you can always protest, but I think you have to be very careful with the anthem."
Trump had previously called James an "absolute disgrace" on social media for his conduct, accusing him of disrespecting the country. During a rally in Iowa, Trump reiterated his criticism, questioning James's actions and calling it a "big scandal."
James has a history of public criticism of Trump, dating back to 2017 when he called the former president a "bum." Trump, in turn, has been critical of James, questioning his status as a basketball player and suggesting he "may be a racist."
On the court following the anthem controversy, James was observed standing with his arms behind his back during the rendition of the national anthem. When asked about Trump's comments after the game, James appeared to dismiss them, stating, "It must be a slow news day at the office, you know."
