Charles Barkley Criticizes LeBron James for Disrespecting National Anthem

Charles Barkley has voiced his disapproval of LeBron James' conduct during the national anthem, calling it "very disrespectful." The basketball Hall of Famer specifically criticized James for practicing his golf swing on the court while the anthem played. Barkley's comments align with recent criticism from former President Donald Trump, who had previously labeled James a "total disgrace" for the same incident.

Barkley, speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio, emphasized his respect for the anthem. "I always stand for the anthem. I just think it’s important," Barkley stated. He added, "We live in the greatest country ever where you can always protest, but I think you have to be very careful with the anthem." While Barkley asserted that he does not typically pay attention to Trump's statements, he agreed on this particular issue.

This is not the first instance of James drawing attention for his actions during the national anthem. In December, while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, James was also observed practicing his golf swing before a game. Another notable incident occurred in 2023 when James entered an arena during the anthem, wearing a hat and sitting down while others stood. This behavior has led to criticism, with Barkley suggesting it was "childish, ridiculous, asinine behavior" given James' background and success.

Barkley also shared his personal perspective on standing for the anthem, explaining, "I look at it, I'm supporting the troops when I stand for the national anthem. I'm standing there for free speech, so even though I believe in free speech, I think you have to be very careful with the anthem."
