Working families in the United Kingdom are experiencing considerable financial strain due to the rising cost of living, according to a charity that supports low-income households. Many of these families, while employed, do not qualify for government benefits and are consequently left without assistance to cover essential expenses.
A spokesperson for the charity, identified as White, noted that conversations with families consistently reveal concerns about escalating costs. "As the years have gone on, everything's become more expensive. But we are not earning enough. Families just can't keep up," White stated. The charity assists families who are on benefits, as well as those who fall just outside the eligibility criteria.
These families, White explained, are "being hit hard" and are "working and getting no help from anywhere." One parent shared an example of having to pay for a daily breakfast club for their child, costing £6, simply to be able to attend work. This situation exemplifies the "cost upon cost for working families," the charity reported.
The organization emphasizes that these financial pressures are preventing families from accessing crucial support schemes, such as free school meals and subsidized holiday clubs. The charity is advocating for greater government intervention to provide more substantial aid to working families who are struggling to meet their basic needs while navigating increased expenses.
