Charity Celebrates Successful Rehoming of Eight Kittens Found Abandoned
Kittens named after popular alcoholic beverages find new homes following abandonment in bin bags.
An animal rescue charity has successfully found homes for eight kittens who were discovered abandoned in bin bags. The litter, all black and white, were found on a street in Grimsby at approximately eight weeks old.
A member of the public discovered the kittens in a plastic rubbish bag and brought them to a local Blue Cross animal shelter. Following routine health checks, the kittens were given beverage-themed names, including Peroni, Miguel, Cruzcampo, Guinness, Madri, Bud, Stella, and Moretti.
The kittens were subsequently transferred to a rehoming center in Oxfordshire, where all eight have since been rehomed. This effort comes amid a reported 15% increase in unwanted or abandoned kittens handled by Blue Cross compared to the previous year.
Hannah Wiltshire, center manager at the Blue Cross's rehoming center, suggested that the cost-of-living crisis may be a contributing factor. She explained that some owners might forgo neutering their cats to save on veterinary costs, potentially leading to unexpected litters that they are unprepared to care for. Additionally, a lack of demand for kittens from owners who breed them could also result in abandonment.
"It is heartbreaking to think that so many unwanted kittens are being left alone, often when they are far too young to fend for themselves," Wiltshire stated. "These eight kittens were incredibly lucky to be found and brought to us. They have now got the happy ending every kitten deserves, but there are many more out there who may not be so fortunate."
