Chargers Offensive Coordinator Mike McDaniel Facing Scrutiny Amidst Team's Struggles

Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is reportedly facing increasing pressure, with "growing buzz" suggesting he could be fired by head coach Jim Harbaugh. The Chargers currently hold an 0-6 record and rank last in the league in offensive DVOA, averaging just 15 points per game.

The team's offensive struggles were again evident in their recent 22-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, where they failed to score a touchdown. This performance has intensified speculation about McDaniel's future with the team.

If McDaniel is dismissed, former Jets head coach Adam Gase, currently serving as the Chargers' passing game specialist, is expected to assume play-calling responsibilities. Harbaugh acknowledged the team's offensive shortcomings, stating, "We're going to look at everything." He added, "The job I'm doing, it starts with me. We'll watch this and get with our offensive coaches... And [offense] needs to be addressed."

McDaniel previously served as the head coach for the Miami Dolphins through 2028 before being fired last offseason. He opted to continue coaching this season with the Chargers after the offensive coordinator position became available. While McDaniel was known for his offensive success with the Dolphins, averaging at least 6 yards per play in 2022 and 2023, that success has not translated to Los Angeles. The Chargers are currently averaging 4.6 yards per play, ranking 26th in the NFL. The team's rushing game has also been a point of concern, with significant snaps taken by running backs Omarion Hampton, Keaton Mitchell, and Kimani Vidal, none of whom have been highly effective. Quarterback Justin Herbert has also struggled, leading the NFL in interceptions with a completion rate of 59.4 percent, the third-worst among starting quarterbacks.
