Chargers Lose Key Tight Ends to Injured Reserve

The Los Angeles Chargers have placed primary tight ends David Njoku and Charlie Kolar on injured reserve, adding to the team's mounting injury concerns and impacting their already struggling offense.

Njoku sustained a fibula injury and was carted off the field during the Chargers' 26-14 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Kolar is sidelined with a forearm injury. Both players are expected to miss at least four games, leaving the Chargers with only one active tight end, Oronde Gadsden II.

The team may need to turn to its practice squad for additional depth, where tight ends Evan Svoboda and Patrick Herbert are currently located. The loss of Njoku and Kolar is particularly detrimental as the Chargers' offense relies heavily on its tight ends for blocking, and Gadsden has struggled in this capacity.

Njoku had recorded eight receptions for 67 yards this season, while Kolar had three receptions for 21 yards prior to their injuries.

These injuries are part of a larger trend for the Chargers' offseason acquisitions, with five players from their free agent class now sidelined. Defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and left guard Kayode Awosika are out indefinitely, and center Tyler Biadasz suffered a season-ending injury during training camp.

The Chargers currently stand at 0-2 after consecutive home losses to the Arizona Cardinals and the Raiders. The team, which entered the season with playoff aspirations, faces a challenging matchup against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh has urged his team to persevere, stating, "When the going gets tough the tough gets going."
