Chargers' Harbaugh Eyes All Aspects of Struggling Offense

The Los Angeles Chargers are conducting a comprehensive review of all facets of their offense as they grapple with an 0-6 record, according to coach Jim Harbaugh. Amidst growing speculation about offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's position, Harbaugh stated Monday that no decisions have been made concerning any part of the offensive unit.

"We’re looking into everything at this point, and that process is ongoing, particularly offensively," Harbaugh said. He indicated that every aspect of the offense is under examination, including the disconnect between practice and game performance. "Our 0-6 record does not give the privilege to rule out anything at this point, and we’re looking into everything."

The Chargers' offense is struggling, compounded by quarterback Justin Herbert's difficulties executing quick throws, which is the base of McDaniel's system. Herbert's preference for extending plays using his physical abilities seems at odds with the scheme. An example was his only explosive pass against the Kansas City Chiefs, a 57-yard heave to Quentin Johnston, which occurred after he bought time in the pocket.

The team's offensive infrastructure is currently limited by injuries on the offensive line and a lack of threatening skill players. Herbert faced four more sacks and nine hits in the recent game against the Chiefs. Wide receiver Ladd McConkey sustained a concussion, forcing Herbert to rely on less experienced players like KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Theo Wease. The ground game has also faltered, with Herbert leading the team in rushing with 26 yards in the loss to Kansas City.

Harbaugh acknowledged that key players like offensive tackle Joe Alt, sidelined with a neck injury, and other injured starters could improve the situation upon their return. However, the offense averaged fewer than 16 points in the games Alt was available earlier in the season.

Replacing McDaniel, who was hired in January, presents limited options for scheme adjustments. Harbaugh has never called plays in the NFL, and other offensive coaching staff have minimal play-calling experience at the professional level. Passing game specialist Adam Gase, who previously served as offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, had a mixed record as a head coach for the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.

In contrast, the Chargers' defense has shown progress, holding the Chiefs to one touchdown in three red-zone opportunities and limiting them to 3 of 10 on third downs. Linebacker Marlowe Wax and defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe combined to stop a fourth-down run at the goal line, a rare positive moment.

Turnovers continue to plague the Chargers, with Herbert throwing his league-leading eighth interception and Lambert-Smith fumbling. The team has committed 15 turnovers in six games, compared to 21 in the entire 2025 regular season.

Several players, including cornerback Deane Leonard, also suffered concussions against the Chiefs. Key players such as safety Derwin James, guard Kayode Awosika, wide receiver Tre Harris, and cornerback Donte Jackson are also dealing with injuries. Harbaugh expressed optimism that the team could see improved health from this group after their bye week.

The Chargers' 0-6 start is their worst since 2000, when they began the season 0-11 on their way to a 1-15 record. Following their bye week, the Chargers are scheduled to play the Rams on November 1.
