A tense, hour-long pursuit unfolded on Los Angeles freeways Tuesday, culminating in a crash and multiple arrests, after a stolen SUV driver engaged police at high speeds and wove through dense traffic. The incident, captured in aerial footage, bore a resemblance to scenes from the "Mad Max" film franchise.

The chase began around 5:15 p.m. after the white Mercedes SUV was reported stolen in North Hollywood. The vehicle was pursued through city streets and onto freeways, with the driver evading law enforcement for over an hour. During the pursuit, the SUV was seen driving on the shoulder of the highway, running red lights, and entering oncoming lanes.

At one point, the SUV encountered a group of at least eight dirt bikers illegally occupying the freeway. The footage shows the stolen vehicle maneuvering dangerously close to the bikers, with one rider performing a wheelie directly in front of the SUV. The vehicle narrowly avoided collisions with the group as it continued to flee.

The pursuit concluded when the unidentified driver crashed the SUV into a parking structure in the Downtown area, near 8th and Hill Street. Multiple individuals were detained by the Los Angeles Police Department. A police spokesperson confirmed that one person was arrested for felony evading, and another is in custody. The identities of those arrested have not yet been released, and at least one suspect was still at large Tuesday night.

Reports from local media indicated the suspect may have been armed with a handgun, though police have not confirmed this. No major injuries or collisions involving the public were reported as a result of the chase. The LAPD established a perimeter to search for the remaining suspect and advised residents to exercise caution.

It remains unclear if any of the dirt bikers will face citations for being on the freeway. Dirt bikes are classified as off-highway vehicles by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
