A tense standoff unfolded on a California school bus Monday when parents, responding to calls from their children, broke into the vehicle and forced the issue of letting students off. The incident occurred along Highway 49 in Calaveras County, with children reportedly held on the bus for approximately an hour.
Footage from the scene shows students escaping through the bus windows, with at least one parent also entering the vehicle through a window to confront the driver. One 12-year-old passenger described the initial atmosphere on the bus as a mix of excitement and confusion about being unable to disembark.
According to the student, the situation escalated after the bus stopped and another child exited through a window. The driver reportedly instructed students to sit down and roll up the windows, stating they would have to wait for law enforcement. This directive angered parents who had arrived after being contacted by their children.
Nichole Wellington, a parent whose son was on the bus, recounted driving to the scene and demanding her child be released. When the driver refused, she instructed her son to climb out a window. Wellington suggested the situation might have resolved differently had the driver released the children directly to waiting parents.
However, another parent, Rebecca Glover, who had two children on the bus, advised them to remain seated, emphasizing the need to consider the safety of all children on board.
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office reported that the incident escalated when a parent allegedly struck the bus door, breaking its glass. The Sheriff's Office stated that this parent was taken into custody for vandalism at the school district's request. Deputies also noted that while students exited through open windows, these should primarily be used for emergencies.
Calaveras Unified Superintendent Kassie Meeks confirmed that the incident began with concerns over student behavior and ultimately required police intervention. The Sheriff's Office reiterated that school bus safety rules are in place to protect students and should be followed by everyone involved.
